CREATING SUCCESS: There’s no secret!

By R. A. Housel, Ph.D.

Success.  We all want it.  We don’t all get it.  Harsh?  Yes.  But that’s life.  However, it doesn’t have to be.  Don’t believe me?  Keep reading.

The way it works starts with you.  Yes, you.  You are the key to your own success, and no, I didn’t steal that from some elementary school teacher’s inspirational posters.  It’s true.  You and success go hand in hand.  In fact, you were made for each other.

The biggest obstacle for most people is learning the meaning of what Susan B. Anthony said a long time ago: “Failure is impossible.”  And if you really think about it, failure is impossible.  Why?  Because failure does not mean getting an F or a C or a B, or not receiving the rank you wanted, or not having that magic amount of money in the bank.  Failure is nothing more than a logical fallacy.

What’s a logical fallacy, you ask?  Good question.  A logical fallacy is something that seems to make sense, appears to be true, but in reality, is completely and utterly false.  Are you working toward your goals?  Are you putting in every possible effort toward success?  Are you considering alternatives if your first plan doesn’t work out?  If you’ve done all these things, then you are already successful and well on your way toward increasing that success.

Thinking and talking about failure only serves to minimize ourselves and our efforts toward success.  It’s just like in the film, Field of Dreams, “If you build it, they will come.”  If you imagine what it is you want, I mean really see it in detail--think hard about how to realistically achieve that desire—you can’t help but succeed.

Too good to be true?  Not really.  Here’s an example:

A long time ago, I knew a student who wanted to achieve great things. However, she did not have the support she needed at home to succeed.  Her parents were involved in their own problems.  No one cared if she failed a test, skipped a class, or blew off school completely.  High school came to an abrupt end.  She graduated with a 78 average and a string of less-than-stellar grades in her wake.  Out of a class of 200, she was 160.  Today, that same person has a Bachelors, Masters, and Doctorate.  She successfully graduated from two of the top-ranked schools, not just in the United States but worldwide.  She is now an author, an international scholar and an educator.  Along the way, people told her she’d never make it.  People had a lot of negative things to say:  She didn’t have enough money; she didn’t have enough intelligence; she didn’t have enough support.  And she didn’t.  But what she did have was the will to succeed.  And that will was all she, or anyone else, really needs.

So, do you have it?  The will to succeed?  The desire so great, you can barely breathe?  Maybe you haven’t quite thought about it yet.  And that's okay, too. Here's your chance to begin!  Start snapping those synapses!  Use your mind-muscle!  EVERYONE has the ability to succeed.  You don’t have to be the top student, the top athlete, the top anything.  Your life evolves, and so do you.  If you haven’t been the best student to date, you can change that.  If you haven’t achieved some goal you wanted, you can make that happen, too.

There’s no secret to success.  Envision what you want.  Act.  Persevere.  And you, too, WILL BE successful.  You, too, will REACH YOUR PEAK, and beyond….
